Title: LiDAR Point Cloud Perception for Forest Management

Abstract:
The Australian Centre for Field Robotics participates in several collaborative research projects with partners in the Australian and New Zealand forestry industry, focussed on quantifying and monitoring forest resources using airborne and terrestrial LiDAR and photogrammetry. In this talk I will discuss some of these recent projects, including an on-going project to combine supervised deep learning algorithms with human-machine interaction via virtual reality to automatically characterise tree structural parameters from LiDAR data in commercial forests.

Bio: Mitch is currently a lecturer at the ACFR and director for the undergraduate mechatronic engineering program at the University of Sydney. He leads the ACFR Forestry research group and his research interest include aerial and marine robotic navigation, mapping and sensor fusion, working in applications in marine science and forestry using computer vision, hyperspectral imaging and laser scanning.
