Title: Robotics and society: An overview of current research projects

Abstract: The talk will present the current projects undertaken under the “Robotics and Society” theme at the Sydney Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Systems. The Robotics and Society theme aims to explore the human-machine relationship and understand in a holistic way the potential impact of technologies on human behaviour and society. The talk will present three multidisciplinary projects involving collaboration across the University of Sydney and with international researchers. The presentation will pose the following question for discussion with the audience: “Why does robotics need multidisciplinary collaboration?”

Bio: Dr Naoko Abe is a Research Fellow at the Sydney Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Systems. She is a sociologist, specialising in social interaction and human movement, with a research focus in Robotics and Urbanism. She obtained a PhD in Sociology from Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS, Paris) and a teaching certificate of Kinetography Laban from Paris Conservatory (CNSMDP). In 2015, Naoko Abe was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Laboratory for Analysis and Architecture of Systems – the French National Centre for Scientific Research (LAAS-CNRS) in Toulouse. In 2016–2017, she was a Renault-Junior International Research Fellow at the Centre for French-Japanese Advanced Studies of Paris (CEAFJP) coordinated by the EHESS France-Japan Foundation (FFJ). She participated in research funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR) as a Research Associate from November 2017 to June 2018.
