Title: VC101: Demystifying how Venture Capital works

Abstract:

In this presentation we will break down how Venture Capital firms operate, how they generate returns for their investors, and what that means for Founders and teams who may be looking to raise venture funding.

Bio:

  • Mike Zimmerman:

Mike is a Partner at Main Sequence, where he leads the Supercharge Industrial Productivity Challenge, and also invests in the Feed 10 Billion People and Next Intelligence Leap challenges.
Mike is passionate about supporting founders and their deep tech companies to achieve maximum impact. With more than 25 years of experience as a founder, executive and investor, Mike helps founders with sales and marketing, business models, strategic partnerships, and funding round milestones and construction. He also provides counsel around executive recruitment, performance management, and board recruitment and structuring.
Mike sits on the Board of the Australian Investment Council and is also a member of the National Robotics Advisory Committee.

  • Jun Qu:

Jun is an Investment Manager at Main Sequence where he helps scientists and entrepreneurs create, build, and scale the next generation of deep tech companies that will change the world. Jun works across all six challenge areas but focuses on the Supercharge Industrial Productivity and Bridge the Gap to Space challenge themes.
Prior to joining Main Sequence, Jun spent several years as an engineer in petrochemicals, before to moving to the US to complete his MBA at Stanford. He then joined McKinsey in San Francisco where he primarily served energy and manufacturing clients on strategy & operations, and was later selected to join McKinsey’s internal tech incubator and investment group, McKinsey Launch, as a Portfolio Manager. He moved to Sydney to join the Main Sequence team in late 2021 and works closely with Mike to help bring the very best of Australian robotics to the world.
